Helix Piercing

The helix has more usable real estate than any other part of the ear, which is why it's the anchor of a curated ear. Your Fakir-certified piercer maps placements so the jewelry follows the natural curve of the rim and each piece has room to swell and heal — spacing matters as much as the individual spots. For stacked or forward helixes we plan the whole layout in one consultation so the finished ear reads as a deliberate composition rather than a random cluster.

The helix is one of the gentler cartilage piercings — most clients rate it 4–5 out of 10, a quick pinch and pressure. It's done with a single-use sterile needle for a clean, well-angled pass, never a gun (a gun crushes cartilage rather than piercing it). Expect mild throbbing for the rest of the day and tenderness for the first week or two.

Simple helix piercings generally heal in 3–6 months, though cartilage often takes 6–9 months to fully settle. Stacked helixes and forward helixes can run a little longer because there's more tissue reacting at once. A downsize at around month three keeps the jewelry from snagging as swelling drops — a long starter post catches on hair and pillows, which is a leading cause of irritation.

A flat-back implant-grade titanium stud is the most comfortable starter — it won't catch on hair or pillows while you heal. Once settled, a seamless or clicker hoop is the classic upgrade. The helix is exposed, so it gets bumped more than tucked-in placements like the daith — which makes the irritation bump the number-one helix complaint. It's a small firm dot from sleeping on it, brushing hair, phone pressure or a snagged starter post, and it's not an infection; it resolves once the trigger stops and you stay consistent with saline. Because the outer rim is thinner cartilage, a helix pierced too close to the edge or at a poor angle can migrate, so correct placement and a downsize are the best insurance. Spreading redness, warmth and pus mean infection and a doctor's visit.

Sterile saline twice a day, keep hair products and earbuds off it, don't sleep on that side, and leave the jewelry alone until your downsize. Avoid swimming while it heals.
